MEKAS is a member-exclusive information service featuring the latest news and analysis on the Japanese fashion market.

We offer subscribers daily updates on breaking news, monthly features on major social changes and clothing trends, street photography, profiles of up-and-coming brands, as well as our unique insights and expert analysis. Based in the heart of Tokyo, we are able to break through the language and culture barriers that have stymied observers in the past and send the most accurate information on Japan to the rest of the world in real time.

The name MEKAS comes from the Japanese word mekasu meaning “to dress up, be stylish” and reflects our principal mission of examining how manufacturers, financiers, designers, stylists, the media, celebrities, and consumers all come together in the widespread pursuit of style in Japan.

W. David Marx is a graduate of Harvard University (B.A., East Asian Studies, 2001) where he wrote an award-winning thesis on the legendary Japanese street-wear brand A Bathing Ape. He also holds a M.A. in Marketing and Consumer Behavior from Keio University. In the past, Marx was an editor of Tokion Magazine and has provided freelance writing on Japanese culture, fashion, and music for such American culture and fashion magazines as GQ, Harper’s, NYLON, and The Fader.


Saleem d’Aronville

Fashion designer and industry consultant Saleem d’Aronvile is a graduate of Manchester University (B.A.) in Fashion Design. He has worked for Village Gate London and as First Creative Director at Mulberry. Recently, Saleem has been working in Tokyo as a Fashion Consultant to Japanese apparel companies as well as guest writer for Japanese publications such as Stile, Navi, and Brutus.

Brendan McMahon:

Brendan, originally from the UK, has lived and worked in Japan and Hong Kong for over twelve years as a Strategy and Brand and Marketing Consultant, advising across a wide range of sectors to companies such as All Nippon Airways (ANA), Hyundai, Nestle, Nissan, NTT DoCoMo, P&G, PCCW, Samsung, Swire Group, Toyota and YKK. Brendan founded and led FutureBrand Japan, the brand consulting arm of McCann WorldGroup prior to joining Tozai Capital, where he sits on the board. He is also Chairman of Diamond Agency.

Sean Wood

Sean Wood has worked as an Art Director in interactive / broadcast media for 20+ years. His experience spans 5 countries, several design awards, many television identities, commercials and countless websites and a handful of Fortune 500 companies. His portfolio is located at 50mm.jp.


MEKAS is housed within Diamond Agency a full-service advertising agency based in Tokyo and is working closely with Hong Kong-based Taosquare Media Group to expand its international footprint.
